Total distance covered = area under v – t graph. From fig.

20 × 25 = 5t 1 2 + (25 – 2t 1 ) 5t 1

or 5t 1 2 – 125 t 1 + 500 = 0

or (t 1 - 5) (t 1 - 20) = 0

⇒ ⇒ t 1 = 5s discard t 1 = 20 s.
